About Using Paper of Record
Searching old newspapers online.. . . is convenient but not perfect.
How well a search works depends on the quality of the microfilm used to create
the archives. If there is a scratch, smear or smudge across a word, it may not
turn up in a search.
Additionally, when searching it's best to use more general
terms. For instance, when looking for an obituary try using the term "funeral"
and a starting date instead of searching on the person's name. Once you get to
the obituary page for an issue, you can look for a specific name. Please
contact the library if you have problems.
About the Grit Newspapers
Publishers and Editors Dietrick Lamade - 1884-1938; George Lamade -
1938-1965
Editorial Policy
The philosophy and vision of the Grit is best summed up by what Lamade
said at a banquet for Grit employees: "Let us always keep the Grit from being
pessimistic and let us avoid printing those things that are calculated to
distort the minds of our readers and make them feel at odds with the world."
Notable Content
In its early years the Grit struggles to turn a profit. To overcome the
debt, Lamade placed coupons in the Grit to attract readers for a lottery for
various prizes. The gimmick worked and circulation doubled. The Grit was
originally part of the Williamsport Daily Sun & Banner and published on
Saturdays until it was established as a newspaper on its own in 1884.
